My hamster is very aggressive, he's a dwarf i just got off of my friend and he is 4 weeks old. I haven't had any problems what-so-ever with him in the past when I visited him in my friends house. he just started biting me and never wants to socialize. i really like him, and i just wish he wasn't so mean.

Dwarf Hamsters have a reputation for being nippy and somewhat aggressive. There are a lot of cage aggressive dwarf hamsters out there. Cage aggressive means that a hamster will attack or bite while in his or her cage. They can be pretty territorial. Believe it or not, many aggressive dwarf hamsters that bite in their cages are well-behaved once they are outside of them. However, getting them out can be a challenge as it really is not very fun to get bit! I've had to handle them a lot in the past, as I work in a pet store and here are some tips to help get him out of the cage without having your hands ripped off, lol.

Use a cardboard tube or hamster tube. Many hamsters will crawl into these and can be removed and "poured" into your hands once away from their turf. Use a large cup. If you cannot get the dwarf to crawl into an opaque plastic cup, try a clear one like a deli container. If you hold the clear cup up to the entrance of the cage (or in the cage if tub-style housing is used) and wiggle your fingers at the bottom (under the cup, not in it) so the hamster thinks it can attack them it will probably run into the cup. You can also give it a quick push into the cup with your free hand the hamster is not sure it wants to go all the way in the cup. Use a dwarf exercise ball. Many dwarf hamsters love these and will run into them as soon as they are held up to the cage entrance.

I hope this helps!

Yeah some dwarf hamsters are very territorial and feel like they are under attack when you place your hand in the cage, which cause them to bite. So try interacting with them outside of the cage. Open the cage door and have a tray/cup/bowl and place their favorite treat in their. They will come onto it eventually. You can then either slide your hamster onto your hand or place your palm on the edge of the surface of the cup/bowl/tray and they will come onto your hand overtime. They most likely will not bite but sometimes they do the first couple of times since it is new and naturally, they're curious. Handle them gently and do not do fast movements. They will soon be tamed and will not be scared by human contact. I did this method and my dwarf hamster now loves to crawl up and down my arm. Be sure to feed them treats if they do not bite you while on your hand. They then will know your hand is a good thing and will want to be on it more often. Hope I helped and good luck! :)

Omg...I remember when my hamster had 6 babies and when they were 4 weeks old they started biting me like crazy!! Whenever I put my hand in the cage, they attacked! Don't listen to those people saying dwarf hamster are JUST aggresive...Its probably just scared! They are weaned when they are 4 weeks old so I guess you got him a bit early so he's probably afraid bc he's not with his mom but yeah I think I'm wrong...My babies just stopped biting when they were about 6 weeks old...and I'm not sure why. But I did just handle them more and more as they got older and they just trust you after you handle them for a long time. I wouldn't say don't worry, he'll grow out of it, you just have to keep handling it. YES it WILL be painfull but its the best way to stop him from biting. I kept one of the babies from that litter and now he bites once in a blue moon. This is just my opinion but I think if you use the gloves thing they won't know you (yer scent) they'll know the gloves. And I COMPLETELY disagree with the person that said use the apple spray thing...thats for sure. I think my answers long enough....

Wow!! This is strange. I've had two dwarf hamsters and they were the sweetest things. I got them at a very young age and handled them all the time. If I called them they would come to the front of the cage because they knew I would play with them. They really are sweet creatures........I'm surprised you are having this trouble with them. Some dwarf's can be nasty but the two I had were amazing. Friends of mine had them and they adored them. Are you rough with them? You have to handle them very gently.

The poor little guy is disorientated and scared, as a general rule you just leave a new dwarf alone for about two days to let him calm down and settle in to his new environment.

After this you can start making friends. Take it real slow, don't just grab him up tempt him with treats and let him eventually walk onto your hand. It takes a lot of time and patience.

Maybe he just needs alittle more time to get used to his new surroundings. Start all over like you are a complete stranger. Slowly introduce yourself to him by offering him treats without trying to pick him up.

After he does get to where he takes treats from you see if he will be alittle more receptive. Make sure you don't surprise him or wake him.

Good luck.

I do have a little guy that will take food from me if my hand is on the outside of the cage, or run over my legs, etc. if I sit in the bathtub and let him do it on his own accord but he does not like me to pick him up or handle him. He is still a cutie though so I just take it as his own personality and enjoy him how I can.

Hmm... Usually is the way you treat him or how much trust he/she has in you. Try on some gloves while you're holding the hamster, and when he tries to bite you, he/she won't hurt you and the hamster will know that you trust him.

That's how I did it!

It's probably scared of you or thinks that your hands are food. Be gentle with it when you hold it, and before handling it, wash your hands, and get rid of the smell of food on your hands. Hope you find this helpful. Try it!!!

Dwarf hamsters are very aggressive and bite ALOT. You should just try and handle it alot with gloves so it doesn't bite. Or try spraying bitter apple spray (you can get it in pet stores) on your hands. It repels most animals from biting.
