i had posted a question on how to make my hammies cage unique a while back and someone gave me a really great answer that involved hand made things for my cage:
her name is nemaeron and this is word for word what she said:
"There are a lot of things you can use for furniture in a small rodent's cage, that hardly cost anything at all. I've used the following for my pet rats:
Empty tissue boxes
Cardboard tubes (like papertowel rolls)
Tie a bandana (or a facecloth) to the top of the cage by its corners to make a nice comfy hammock. Or if the top of your cage is wire mesh, you can use safety pins to attach it.
Lengths of PVC pipe. A 3/4" elbow bend can be hung from the top of the cage with some butcher's twine, and can be filled with treats.
If you have small embroidery hoops (4" or less) you can use one to hold an old sock open.
An old flowerpot tipped on its side makes a nice hideaway.
A cool-whip tub (or similar plastic container) can be made into a nesting box by cutting a circle in the side, large enough for the rodent to get through.
If you make cut-off shorts, save the pant leg. Thread two dowel rods through it, and attach to the top of the cage with wire to make another type of hammock.
Just use your imagination, and you'll be surprised what you can come up with."
I followed her advice and made a hammock for my hammie and he LOVES it!! I also took a bunch of toliet tubes and cut circles in the sides so that I could see my hammie crawling around inside them- I fixed them all together in a tunnel system at the bottom of his cage and threw a little bedding on top so now he has an under ground tunnel to play in and chew on! it's funny to watch him disappear and reappear on the other side of the cage like "whoa!"
hope this helps: that nemaeron sure is a creative one!
