I house my male Syrian hamster in a tank which I clean every week. I take it in the bathtub and scrub with a sponge and dishwashing detergent, then rinse it off. No matter how many times I soap and scrub however, the stench of hamster urine still lingers! The tank can be sparkling but the smell just won't go away. How can I clean it efficiently and get rid of the pee odor?

I've heard bleach works but won't that irritate my hamster's nose?

Use some baking soda...It is abrasive (but not enough to harm glass), absorbs odors, and is non-toxic. If the smell is really bad, coat the whole inside of the tank with the baking soda and let it sit for awhile. Be sure to rinse well when you are done scrubbing the tank. That will help. Take care!

You can use diluted bleach, baking soda or mix some vinegar & water this too will get rid of the urine smell. My daughter had a guinea pig in a glass cage for 6 years ,she has used all of these methods. The key to keeping it odor free is cleaning it every 3 days! Make sure to use cedar chips , this helps out too.

Okay that's good that your cleaning the cage every week. How long have you had that cage? It should be coming out maybe your not scrubbing hard an of get your mom or dad to help you. It might be because the cage is old. But go get some of the a cage cleaner spray its available at petsmart.

hop i helped!!

Use baking soda and water its the best.

If you dont like hamsters pee smell get a litter box for him both my hamsters that had it learned to use it with in the day they sell them and littler at petsmart and petco. The litter (aka the best corn cob) is really cheep and the small litter box is also cheap you dump it out once a day and replace it with new litter that way you dont have to clean pee out of the cage and smell it all week :)

Don't use bleach whatever you do!! It won't just irritate it's nose, but his paws as well. Even if there is a tiny bit of bleach left it will irritate his paws.

Try using some animal disinfectant that also eliminates odours, that should work.
