My sister broke off part of my chinchilas tail! Answer!?

Only like an inch and a half. It's not bleeding a lot but it is a little. It's 10:00 so I can't call the vet. What do I do?

Chinchilla tails are made to break off so they can evade predators.
If it's not bleeding, and the animal isn't suffering, leave it alone.
Really, alone. Stress can kill the little guys, so leave him in a quiet room for the night.

Well, keep it clean. I'm not a chinchilla pro, but I have a degu who are supposed to be related to them. My degu came with a tail that was missing the ending tip (where the tail fluff is and a little below). Apparently the people didn't know that they're not like mice or rats and cannot be picked up by the tail - so they returned him to the pet store. Normally they don't take returns, but seeing that they had no idea what they were doing, they took him back. We came in, saw the poor rejected guy with a bit of missing tail and took him in a heart beat. It's been almost a year and the fluff actually grew back to where the tail has now ended. I think we were lucky with him though since it's more normal for the tail to stay bald and scabbed over for the rest of their life.
I do know chinchillas can be very skittish, hyper animals that can die from too much activity, so once you clean her up, you might want to leave her be in the dark for a bit to calm down. Take her to the vet in the morning, immediately, to make sure that no infection will come out of this. I'm hoping she'll be ok, though. Good luck!

Damn, how old is your sister to be breaking off a chinchillas tail??? Just kindin'. Just try to get the blood to stop running.
"Tail injuries
See your vet if your cat's tail is limp, has been trapped in a door, or pulled hard. Such injuries can cause serious bladder problems. " - This applies to a cat but they are similar
As soon as possible go to a vet. I'm sure there are 24 hour vets.

House the animal alone. If no displacement has occurred, put a collar on the animal and do nothing else. Avoid handling by the tail for at least four weeks. If displacement has occurred contact your local veterinarian. Call your local vet in the am and ask their advice.

Put the broken off part in paper towel then a baggie and in the freezer, bandage up your chin's tail and take it to the vet asap to see if it can be reattached. if it isn't bleeding a lot, the bandage should be enough to keep it safe (you'll need gauze, if not, clean sock and tape, making sure the wound can breathe but it covered)
