I have noticed the past few days that the fur around my hamster's nose is a little wet when he wakes up. After he grooms himself is dries out and doesn't have a runny nose. There are no signs of diarrhea or wet tail altogether. He eats and drinks normally and is as lively and friendly as he used to be. Is it something to be concerned about?

I don't think that's normal...

The nose Wet, Running, or Moist? Wet and Running could be a sign of an illness, careful when deciding this one. Moist is not something to worry about and start to your rip your hair out. Keep a close eye on the hamster if you suspect it just isn't taking a drink of water frequently (which could signal dehydration and later on turn into constipation if I'm not mistaken) Wet could be a sign of previously running nose or simply a drink of water. A runny nose frequently and/or infrequently visibly draining is a sign of a cold. Sniffles, stuffy nose, crusty nose are a sure sign for a cold.

COLDS & INFLUENZA: Humans can transmit viral infections (colds and flu) to hamsters. Hamster colds can rapidly turn into pneumonia and death. Symptoms include sneezing, running nose, sometimes watery eyes and a high temperature, which is normally accompanied by lethargy. Treatment includes antibiotics prescribed by a veterinary, which may also be administered to prevent secondary infections. Keeping the hamster warm is essential. Vicks placed out of reach of the ill hamster but close enough to inhale will assist breathing and can help alleviate some congestion. Also, an old English remedy is lukewarm milk and water with a teaspoon of honey; but if improvement is not seen within two days treatment should be sought from a veterinary. Weight loss, shivering and chattering and conjunctivitis may indicate Pasteur Ella pneumotropica, an infection of the lungs. Again, treatment is antibiotics as prescribed by the veterinarian.
