2 years is the kind of average age for a hamster. I remember when i was a kid I had a syrian and he lived over 2 im sure.
Im married now, and we got a male syrian exactly a year ago. But we think he will live way past two. He is so happy, contented and very well looked after. We are hoping he will be one of those rare cases you hear about where they reach 4!
I think thats the secret to any animal living a long life. Plenty of love, care and attention. Make sure you clean and disinfect his cage weekly and feed him the right diet, and im sure me and you will have them well past 2!

My first (and only) Syrian hamster lived to be three and a half.
Depending on where you got the hamster, and the longevity of the breeding lines involved, yours could have a longer or shorter lifespan.
Private breeders' hamsters often have longer lifespans because they have been bred with health and longevity (long life) in mind first and foremost. These are traits that good breeders breed for.
Hamster bought from pet stores usually have a shorter lifespan, because they come from the hamster equavelant of "puppy mills" where they are severely inbred and they often have genetic health defects like congestive heart failure, kidney failure, etc.
Good luck!

Depending on the care your hamster can live up to 4 or more years. The average lifespan is 2-3 years meaning that is an average. I know of one hamster who lived to be a ripe old lady of 6. My own experience leads me to believe that if you care for it properly, then you can expect it to be a nice companion for a long time.
Just FYI: paper bedding will allow your hamster to live longer than wood. Wood bedding breaks down and particles get into their lungs. Also avoid Carrots, Lettuce and Yogurt Drops due to sugar content and addictive properties of Lettuce. Give Tofu for protien and hamster pellets/food. Avoid giving too many sunflower/pumpkin seeds these cause a malabsorption of calcium allowing the teeth to become weak and possibly break or cause maloclusions.

I had a cute little syrian called Fudge cos she was white and had little fudge coloured patches. She lived for 3 and a half years. I never got anymore after her as I'd developed asthma and tests showed I was sensitive to animal fur, but I love hamsters, they can be so cute.
