Re-Post... About hamsters going into torpor. Can someone please help?

Last night I thought my syrian hamster was dead, I touched her and noticed she was cold but not rigid so I picked her up and she moved. I thought about torpor so I held her close to me until she woke up more, then put my lizards heat mat under her cage and put her back in. She is fine today, but I am confused about something: Her and my russian dwarf hamster were in the same place, on the top of my lizards vivarium, but my dwarf hamster was fine. How come the syrian went into torpor whereas the dwarf hamster was fine?

As already said different Species of hamster have different requirements, and can tolerate changes in temperature in different ways.



I have noticed that a change of a few degrees can make my syrian go into hybernation.



I am not too sure on viv's, but does yours have a light on top just underneath where the hammy lives? If this is on it heats up, when you turn it off it will cool down again, therefore giving you the changes i temperature that will bring these episodes on.



I think it is time to find another place for your hammies.
