Question:
How do I find the right cage for my guinea pig?
2010-02-19 05:51:25 UTC
Well It's in a really small cage right now it can barely move. Whats worse is my mom doesnt even care she doesnt want anything to do and treats it like any other house rat. Only my dad cares the other day he went out to look for a cage but the stupid people at the pet store recommended a 10-gallon fish tank. After watching a few vids I realized it can cause problems so we didnt put it in. Where do we buy those? Oh, by the way my mom is a real **** see we have two houses and she wont let me take it home to the place we often live in. We only depend on a caretaker there. I have a plan i'll tell my mom it wont make a mess anymore cause its in a fish tank and not in a wire cage then release it for a few hours in my room. I have pine shavings as beddings and they gave me rabbit pellets as food.

Well I think if your parents can afford 2 houses and a caretaker then I think she can afford to buy a cage!

www.guineapigcages.com

An aquarium is definatly not suitable, a tiny wire one is better than a large aquarium!

Just go with your dad to the pet store and buy the biggest wire cage they have.

(Im guessing since your parents are rich that money isnt an issue)

Wow. The people at that pet store are ignorant idiots. A fish tank is NOT proper housing and rabbit pellets are NOT proper food. Guinea pigs, like humans, do not process their own vitamin C and they need that supplemented through their food. Get pellets made for GUINEA PIGS, not rabbits.

A really good resource for guinea pig info is GuineaLynx. You can google it. I'd link it, but don't want to be accused of spamming. An excellent resource on housing is guineapigcages.com. None of the commercially made pet store cages are really sufficient. And the ones that are somewhat close to big enough are WAY more expensive than the ideas at guineapigcages.

in case you desire to maintain numerous funds and great chuffed piggies then build a C&C cage. in case you like a no longer so chuffed guinea pig and pay on the factor of or over one hundred funds for a too small cage then circulate purchase one from the puppy save. Even the "massive" puppy save cages are not great adequate. In my adventure guinea pigs are lots happier with extra advantageous areas recent in c&c cages, plus you additionally may cause them to in good shape into particular areas at your domicile of abode!

Choosing the best cage for your guinea pig is one task you should accomplish before going home with your pet. Due to a numerous variety of cages, makes it difficult to make the right decision of choosing the one that's right for you. You have to take some pointers and important details to make sure your cavy's cage is safe, spacious, comfortable, clean and attractive.

Where to Get the Cage

Commercially built cages are always available in your pet stores. It is usually designed for one guinea pig and the price ranges from thirty to fifty dollars. Another type is the custom-built. This cage is usually designed according to your preference but built by a professional such as a carpenter or by your local pet store. The last is built by your own hard work. If you have the knowledge and skill to make one then do it. It is less expensive and you would have all the details from your creative mind put into action.

Safety

Never buy or create a cage with a wire bottom because the risks it poses to your cavy. Limbs are often broken and injured from these wire mesh. Some cages are often times overshadowed by their design and aesthetic features that the buyer fails to see that it has a wire bottom. So don't be impulsive in buying one, always remember that not all attractive and expensive cages provide the necessary safety for your guinea pig.

Make sure the cage is not accessible to other creatures in the house. As an easy prey, cavies are very fragile and delectable. So remember to keep the cat away for your cavy's sake.

Keep your cage on a stable place. Wind and other elements can knock out the cage and cause serious damage to your pet. Add additional support and place the cage away from the window.

If you are using a C&C cage make sure to use a 14x14 inch grid. 8x8 grids have reportedly been very dangerous and cause a number of strangulation deaths.

Space

A single guinea pig should have a minimum of 2 square feet of area in the cage. The more guinea pigs you have the bigger cage they would need. And as a good saying goes, bigger is way better. A spacious room provides adequate area to play. This keeps your guinea pig always on the go. A congested and closed tight area makes your pet static. A major health problem can arise from creatures that eat all day doing nothing.

Cleanliness

Choose a cage that is easy to clean. Commercial cages usually have a removable bottom pan which makes cleaning easy as one two three. A large opening door in a cage also provides easy access for you if you are cleaning it. Be sure to remove poop and urine regularly.

Aquariums

Many pet owners use aquariums as guinea pig homes. However, numerous studies state that it is not the ideal place for a cavy. Be aware that it is very difficult to clean and it needs special solutions to totally remove the stains. Air ventilation is also limited and pressure can often build up if it becomes too hot or too cold. Keep it away from direct sunlight and remember to let the air out after disinfecting it. Fumes from the disinfectant can remain contained in the aquarium and can make your cavy sick.

Petshop cages for one guinea pig are way too small as you have found. Tanks arnt great because of lack of oxygen. Go to a petshop and get a cage advertised for rabbits, or one that they say 2 guinea pigs can be kept in, these are usually big enough for one, aswell as floortime everyday.

Please do not leave it in a house without visiting it for atleast 3 hours everyday. Guinea pigs are social animals and need lots of human contact especialy as you only have one. Or if you cannot bring it to your house, youshould atleast get another guinea pig, and a much bigger cage. You should still visit everyday, to give them atleast an hour human contact, an hour or 2 of floor time, and you should clean out soiled areas and fill up food and water. My one guinea pig has 3 and a half table spoons of pellets which lasts her around 24 hours. I would double that if you are getting two, and put a spoon extra incase. You will need LOADS of hay.

I have just realised the bottom of your question.

DO NOT FEEDD RABBIT FOOD Rabbit food is for rabbit, and called rabbit food for a reason. Get guinea pig food.

If you cannot do this, I dont mean to be rude or hurtful, but it might be better to give it up for adoption. Do not give it back to thde petshop as what you say, it doesnt sound great!!

I know this is not what you want to hear but maybe it is best if you rehome your piggie. Leaving the fella behind is not fair. I know you care alot about him and are doing the best you can but if your moms going to be ahem *#%@&* about it then its probably best for the family and the pet if you try and find him a really great home.

If you decide to keep him I suggest neat idea storage cubes. You can make a pretty decent cage out of them, and to prevent spilling shavings put a plastic kiddie pool on the bottom to hold the shavings.

Heres some sites on it:

www.ontariorabbits.org/diet/careinfo2.htm

http://princessblackie.homestead.com/

http://sprowtybun.tripod.com/nic.html

Some of those links reference bunnies but these cages work for pigs to.

Also find a new pet store. Pigs need pellets that are made for them not buns. Also he needs lots of fresh veggies!

Well... First of all, pine shavings isn't really a good bedding for guinea pigs, fish tanks don't have enough air circulation, and rabbit pellets are REALLY not good:( Try a C&C cage, they are put together cages that are good for the guinea pigs. They sell them on: http://ebay.com Try recycled paper for the bedding, and regular guinea pig pellets for the food. Fore more info. on Guinea pig care, try www.jackie'sguineapigs.com Hope i helped:)

Please don't use pine shavings! They can cause respatory infections and other desises. They need hay not just pellets and they need GUINEA PIG pellets! This is a good cage.

First of all, there's no need to curs out your mom. Go to a pet store and ask them; they are experts. Here's a last tip: when your mom's not busy, sit down and talk to her. :)
