omg, yes they smell!! actually the hamsters don't really smell, its their cage, and no matter how many times you clean it, it will smell again in a couple of hours, bcuz hamsters go to the bathroom a lot.

in my experience they do bite also. supposedly they can be "tamed" to not bite, but good luck with that.

i would recommend gerbils or rats, they are much better pets and both love being handled (unlike hamsters)

usually its not the animal who smells

its the cage. see hamsters they clean themselves so thats why u always see them busy but they do make a mess in the cage while doing so. but keep the cage clean and you will have no smell

now for the biting part.YES they do bite and you can get infections but this is very rare to happen.before buying a hamster ask the person to see if you can hold it

if it lets you hold the hamster and the hamster doesnt have a problem then keep him and he will usually bit when he is hungry

if ahamster does bite you quickly run to a sink and put hot hot water and add you hand inside it and it will take some of the effect of the bite off.also after that pour some alcohol on your hand so it can get alot of the effect of the bite of.but treat a hamster right and you will never have a hamster biting you. it can be your best friend or it can be your worst enemy if you dont feed it.

No hamsters do not smell. Its there owners that dont clean the cages out regularly that make people think hamsters smell.

Certain breeds are nippy, The most laid back are the syrian hamsters ( teddybear/goldern) the smaller breeds can be nippy. Males tend to bite less than females too.

Had my male syrian for a year, he has never bitten and certainly does'nt smell!!

They can bite alot depending on what type of hamster you get. I have heard that Teddy Bear Hamsters will bite less. i know Siberian (or Russian) Dwarf Hamsters bite alot!

They, like all small, caged animals, can smell if you don't clean out their cages regularly (like at least once a week).

I can't think of any animal that doesn't smell.

Good luck! :)

They don't smell as long as you clean the cage out regularly and properly.

They can bite if scared by being suddenly grabbed. If you're thinking of getting one, here's a few tips:

1. Put everything in the cage, if you don't want the hamster to chew the bars (which is predominantly a sign of boredom), give it plenty of things to run over and through.

2. When you've introduced the hamster to the cage, leave it alone for 2 days to allow it to get used to it's new surroundings, obviously you'd still check it's ok.

3. Allow it to get used to your scent by slowing introducing your hand into the cage, but don't pick it up just yet. Keep doing this quite a few times in the day (especially in the evening and night when they're more active)

4. If you have children who will want to to handle it too, teach them how to handle hamsters properly and gently.

5. Give them wooden shapes or them treat sticks you can buy to nibble on as this will help keep their teeth trimmed.

Yes.

If you are going to own a hamster and you buy a female you must watch out!

If the cage gets dirty white stuff on the bottom of the cage the hamster will get sick.

They get a uterus infection! The womb get infected with bugs and will make the hamster pee blood and make its heart beet very fast!

The hamster will die soon so you will have to take it to the vet a.s.a.p!

If the medicine the vet gives it and it does not work I'm afraid the hamster will have to be put to sleep sadly!.

Male hamsters are much more easy to look after, but they do need more food and water.

I'm sorry if I could not have been any more help to you :',(

So be very careful!

I Cleened my hamster's cage once a week and it still smelled a little. It is great for a first pet. Some hamsters bite. Some hamsters bite once in a while, when they are frightend. My hamster, though, did not bite me at all. You can also train your hamster not to bite you too.

Russian hamsters have a tendency to bite. (the little guys with the stripe down their backs) And Teddy bears and the larger hamsters usually don't bite. They do smell but only if you don't clean the cage often enough. Males smell more than females too.

Hamsters smell as much as any other pet. The trick is keeping their cage clean. A clean cage = a lovely smelling hammy. =)

Also, hamsters are notorious biters. They can bite (and hard) when surprised or woken up.

Hamsters smell if their cage is neglected, use a good cedar bedding and clean it regularly and smell should not be a problem. All animals have the capability to bite, start handling your pets with leather gloves until they become comfortable with you. Then the biting will be over.

Female hamsters can smell quite strong in season, and can bit a bit more grumpy then the males. And as long as there bed is nice and clean i don't really think they smell at all.

If they don't get clean every other day their cage or aquarium will start smelling bad. and about the biting, they usually don't bite unless your hand or finger has food smell, so if you have been eating it is a good idea you wash with soap very well before holding them, to remove any smell.

If they aren't properly socialized/handled, then yes, they can and will bite.

As long as you keep the cage clean (spot clean daily, full cage clean weekly), then there's not really a smell to be concerned about.

They smell less than rats and mice (much less than male mice who REALLY smell) do but MUCH more than gerbils.

If you clean them out a couple of times a week the smell will not be an issue.

They are a bit more prone to biting than rats and gerbils but are not totally viscous-they can get really tame if you handle them a lot.

They dont really smell at all if you keep up on cleaning there cage, and they dont bite unless they have been treated wrong.

Usually they smell a bit but if u keep the cage clean then it will be ok. They usually dont bite unless you scare them of hurt them.
