my rats chew through everything i buy them so fast its pretty unaffordable so i'm trying to look for more natural things for them to chew on instead of overpriced pet store toys

they need to chew to wear down the teeth I give mine bones keeps them amused gnawing and chewing for hours also the protein and calcium is good for them. They really love chicken bones and soup bones. Mine like to chew on citrus branches also and can chew all the bark off. I also give them cuttings of the passion fruit vine which soon disappears. Grass from the garden is much appreciated. Olive tree branches also get chewed so good luck and happy hunting.........

Rats love to chew up newspaper, carboard, and even blocks of wood.

Here is a list of homeade chew toys you can give to your rats.

1. Macadamia nuts in their shell. Or any other hard shelled nut for that matter (try pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, etc).

2. Cooked chicken or beef bones (that's Statty gnawing one in the photo)

3. Wood chews (preferably non-pine). You can buy flavoured wood blocks from pet stores, or soak some clean wood blocks in juice for flavour. Your rats may also enjoy paddle pop sticks (leave some icecream on it for them!) or disposable wooden chop sticks, and will probably chew on any wooden toys in their cage.

4. Nylabone edibles

5. Hard, low protein, low fat dog biscuits (e.g. Eukanuba Restricted Calorie Rewards)

6. Baby teething rusks

7. Wine corks -

8. Cardboard boxes - these make a handy nest box and chew toy in one.

I once owned rats I had one and she had babies. But yes its safe for rats to chew on sticks. you should clean them up if its from out side. and ways I believe it maybe better for your rats to have news paper or card board, I mean yes it may get messy but to take care of rats or any pet is a little messy. Good look.

any sticks from outside have to be baked for 10 minutes at 350 or boiled in saltwater..they have mites and other parasites that domestic rats cant fend off

Boil or bake, try not to get any that have been around chemicals or pesticides. I don't recommend cedar or pine.
