We went to PetSmart today and got all my supplies and looked at the hamsters. I found one that's very sweet and already tamed. The lady was petting it and it didn't bite at all. My cage is going to be here Thursday and we are getting my hamster Thursday. What should I do when I bring it home and any advice and tips? Also any homemade toys I can make? Thanks! It's a winter white dwarf also!

I am not a hamster expert so I'll do my best on this one. 1. No, you can not feed them cheese, feed them pellets/hamster food and fresh veggies if you want, milk products aren't good for most animals. 2. You can try to wake your hamster up whenever you want to, it might just go back to sleep, or it might want to have fun and play with you. It is probably best to try and keep the hamster up during the day so that he doesn't keep you up all night. 3. I don't really know, but I'm sure keeping the cage clean, and making sure all the food and water is fresh will help keep away any illnesses your hamster might get. 4. You might be able to. You can get one of those little travel cages for him. Some animals travel very well others do not. You can always try it and see how he likes it or if it is too much work for just a short trip. 4. (again?) Some hamsters know the sound of their owners voices and get very excited when you come home. Others get exited when anyone is talking, others have no interest no matter what. Likely the more time you spend with your hamster the more he will like you and will come when you call him. 5. Pine/cedar shavings should be fine, that is what I mostly see in pet stores for hamsters. You might want to do more research into what the best kind of shavings are for hamsters. 6. You should be able to take him home in a carrying cage. Panda is a decent enough name. I'm not really into naming an animal on its look more about naming an animal on its personality.

bedding- aspen, even though cedar doesnt smell, never do cedar or pine, i suggest you switch if u got cedar or pine. (care fresh is good tooo).

food- i use hamster and gerbil advanced nutrition blend.

i give him one scoop a day, and dump out all old food every 2 days.

water- give fresh water everyday!!

Fresh foods and produce

http://roborovskihamsters.webs.com/feeding.htm <---that website has the fruits, veggies to give, and not to give.

When you first handle, make sure you have some gloves, even if tamed. after a few days, you can remove!!

wash your hands before and after you touch ur hamster.

i recomend you get a play pin, and make it so it surrounds the cage, as some hamsters do get out, so that way if you away from her, and she gets out, your easily safe from running around trying to find her.

i hope you chose a cage with not all wire.

all wire can eventually hurt their feet.

oh

and dont smuther it when you get it. leave it alone and pet it and let it run around in his ball everyday.

but dont pick him up right away and expect him to love you foreverr.

Just keep its food and water topped up, make sure it has plenty of bedding and keep the cage clean. Also, give it a few days to settle into its new home before you take it out to stroke it and pet it.

dwarfs are adorable (: and when you 1st get the hamster in its new cage make sure you give it time to adapt to it before you start playing with it and loveing it. about the toys, you could use toliet paper roles for it to go threw, ut he might end up chewing it up, best bet is to buy some tubes and houses for it to play in. maybe get it one of the balls to role in. oh and you have to have a wheel for it x) ok bye (:

make sure they have lots of things to chew on. wood, some stuffed toys, and lots of treats. make sure you always have cabbage with you as well. just let it sleep and get used to the environment on it;s own before you start playing with it though.
